Markku Salo

Markku Salo is a Finnish artist and designer whose practice spans an unusually wide range — from precisely crafted glassware to large-scale site-specific sculpture. He has lived and worked in Nuutajärvi since 1983, a historic glass village dating back to 1793, now home to a community of artists, blacksmiths, ceramists, and glassmakers. This environment of collective craft deeply informs his outlook: for Salo, design is teamwork, while art is a more solitary pursuit — and the balance between the two defines his creative life. Recent commissions include eleven integrated stainless steel sculptures for a new hospital in Tampere. His work for NUDE — including the ridged tumblers that bear his characteristic attention to tactility — reflects the same rigour he brings to every scale of work.
